One year, one person, one thousand miles.
Over the course of 2021, I’ve challenged myself to run 1,000 Miles in the hope of raising as much money as possible for AKT and Diabetes UK – you can find out more about those charities here.
I’ve spent most of my life overweight and completely averse to exercise. Indeed, until the Spring of 2020, I hadn’t ever completed a 5km run without stopping to walk at least once. Therefore this really is a major challenge – going from 40 years of barely running at all, to over 1,000 miles in one year. You can find out a bit more about me and my previous aversion to exercise here.
For reference, 1,000 miles (1610 km) is:
- More than 38 marathons
- Further than driving from Lands’ End to John O’Groats
- The distance from my house (in Exeter) to Rome, plus a marathon once I’d gotten there
- More than running a 5k six days a week all year

The Charities
AKT and Diabetes UK are two exceedingly worthy causes that deserve as much support as possible. The money from the challenge will be split evenly between them. You can find out more about them here.
The Runs
The runs are being logged via Strava, which uses GPS to track distance and time. Those runs will be added to this site so you can see how far I’ve gone and how far I have left to go. You can access the log of runs here.
